The Inflatable Series #1: Flamingo

The Flamingo is my largest project yet, 70x100 cm (or 28x40"), and is set to be the first in a series of 3 large paintings with inflatables.

This piece (and the series) is meant to bring a summery breeze to the often so grim style that dominates stencil art. I wanted this to be a colourful and positive piece, that had nothing to do with politics or pop culture or critiques on society. A simple pool float, for kids and adults alike, can only be associated with summer, relaxation, and good weather. By mixing gradients within the stencil and ragged edges around the stencil I was able to make the rubber almost tangible, and a few simple spots create the illusion of a lense flare to further emphasize the summery feel.
